Whether you fancy a traditional Sunday roast or something lighter there are vineyards all over the UK ready to serve up locally sourced delights. At Llanerch, near Cardiff, their two rosette award winning restaurant offers exceptional Sunday lunches with 3 courses for £36 (Spring ’24). I went on Mother’s Day in my daughter’s final year at Cardiff Uni and really wishes I had discovered Llanerch sooner!
There were several choices for each course catering for a wide range of tastes. After a delicious beetroot, walnut & feta salad, I opted for catch of the day – a mouthwatering monkfish. The rest of my family opted for traditional roasts with perfectly cooked meats, crispy roast potatoes, fluffy Yorkshires and plentiful vegetables and gravy.
The desserts were equally impressive. I finished with chocolate delice whilst the sticky toffee pudding was a family favourite. My daughter is lactose intolerant and said the sorbets were excellent. There was also a Welsh cheese board available for those who don’t have a sweet tooth.
All the Llanerch wines were available by the glass. We enjoyed the Cariad pinot noir sparkling rose and the Estate Blush still rose. The service was superb and sitting overlooking the vines I felt incredibly spoilt. There was even a woodland trail if you wanted to walk off some of the excesses. Llanerch also has a hotel which is described as luxurious and tranquil – and I imagine it is – I’ve added it to my wish list of places to stay!
Wales (especially just 10 minutes off the M4) may not be the first place that comes to mind for vineyard experiences, but this really is something special.
